The Sindab Project
212-305-6816
In February of 1999, an anonymous donor gave a
gift of $2 million dollars to the New York Presbyterian Hospital
to establish the Jean Sindab African American Breast Cancer Project
at Columbia Presbyterian Center.
This project, unlike any other in the country, is exclusively designed to study breast cancer in African American women. According to the National Institutes of health, African American women are less likely than others to develop breast cancer, but they are also less likely to survive it. The Sindab Project's main objective is to further understand breast cancer in African American women through funding scientific research projects.
The project's outreach has mainly focused on the Harlem and Northern Manhattan communities of New York City. Within these communities lie a significant number of African American women who have developed or are at risk of developing breast cancer. We are speaking with women in the waiting rooms of Harlem and Columbia Presbyterian Hospitals about the importance of participating in breast cancer research projects. We also provide women with information on where to find local screening clinics and breast cancer support groups.
